CONCEPTS IN ADVANCED EDITING

CONCEPTS IN ADVANCED EDITING

Editing is the first stage in the stages of film production.
Cutting, mosaic and montage are a part of the editing process.

The technique of juxtapositioning of imagery in various sizes was strongly visible in the movie Physco. In the murder scene of the movie, the nude woman could not be showed directly being murdered. Here comes the creative usage of the editing skills.
The murder had to be shown impressionistilly. The camera first gave emphasis on the woman bathing behind the curtain, then the approachement of a blurry dark figure, the voice of stabbing the knife bluntly into her while focusing on the face and hand, followed by the stains of blood across her face and then her dead state, this series of editing angle conveyed the story of murder very well without the murder actually taking place.  Mr. Alfred Hitchcock who is also known as the "The Master of Suspense" was the creative mind behind this movie who has acclaimed much appreciation for his efforts and talent portrayed especially in ‘Physco’.

The second murder in the movie Physco created apprehension first and then the juxtapositioning of images. This shows how assembly of films can be changed to create different ideas. The movie had very well placed cuts and clever camera movements that made shots look unedited.

Earlier people shot what interested them, they held a shot until they got bored or the film ran out. Then why should one pay money when one could see the same thing on the streets. EDITING!
Editing is the most important stage in post production which completely changes the angle of the movie and tells  a story to the viewers without it actually happening.
Editing has thus given the film industry a new language. A language that transports us in to blink of an eye to a dessert, to the mysteries of a human face.

The timing of a cut can startle the audience or amuse them.

In the much popular movie series of scream, Drew Barrymore plays an important role of the subject in the murder scene. The scene was edited quite creatively.
There is peace and calmness established initially when drew is casually talking over the phone. The scene then grows into a darker one when the lights become less; the background music creates mystery and the movement of camera shifts.
There is fear created by the focus on emotions of the subject. Many events take place at the same time and create anxiety. This shot targets the target audience of a phantom movie viewer. There is an element of surprise and curiously in the entire movie of what will happen next. This question, “what will happen next” is evolved continuously through movie.

Thus editing is an inevitable part of any movie which can completely change the perception  and the thought process of the viewers by deceptive story telling.

FASHION FILM PRODUCTION – FILM CRTIQING

FASHION FILM PRODUCTION – FILM CRTIQING

A normal video when put across in a creative way so that the viewers can perceive what’s happening on the screen in the same light as the director wants the viewer to requires great editing skill. With editing skill, comes the sound, scripting, and production design and photography skills.

The film PRADA starts with the details of the place where the entire movie is shot. This place remains consistent throughout the movie which made it quite non-distractive despite of the various scenarios taking place throughout the video.
There is a focus on both wide angle shots and zoom in shots of the characters which display the emotions and are able to convey the experience of being in that scenario to the viewers without being present there physically. Creation of an environment

The beginning was attention grabbing with a sudden burst of action in a silent lively scenario, which created engagement. There is no character revolution, instead there is a focus on the lifestyle, attitude, story and nature of a particular character which merges well with the environment in the way its been shot, given the extensive editorial skills used. The cuts were precise and there was a smooth movement between shots. The viewers could perceive the story the director was trying to tell creatively. Emotion focused

In the movie, crush, sound played a vital role as the voice over was the only sound playing. Although voice over is generally avoided while composing short films, but in this movie, the voice over and the visuals were in good balance and conveyed a strong engagement story with a lot of focus on emotions. It is not a cliché story, instead it seems like the story really resonates with director and hence the viewers are able to connect to it as well.

Both the above films, are short. The shorter the better.
The first one is more visual and uses the technique of ‘show and not tell’.
The script is crisp short and clear focuses on the subject throughout and is engaging.
It starts off as with a scenario where many people are sitting and focuses on the emotions of the people. Then there is a dramatic/ action entry of the subject. From then on the story focuses on him and the ending is quite satisfying.

use of voice overs throughout
‘The others me’ movie focuses on place, the subject and the emotions in particular.
The tone and environment create mystery and suspicion in the way it’s shot alerting the viewer that there is something dark that will happen soon. Thus creating engagement by evoking feeling of fear, doubt, mystery and excitement.
This movie is deprived of any form of distraction and thus quite appealing and consistent in its tone and manner of shooting. The photography angles are quote clear showing both wide angle and zoomed up shots quite creatively in a flow.

In these short movies , character interaction and focus, consistency, sound , depth are present with an element of surprise which have really made them worthy to watch which is an important element for all short movies.

Importance Of Scripting

Importance Of Scripting

“The reason one writes isn’t the fact he wants to say something. He writes because he has something to say.”~Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald

Scripting plays a very important role in making a film. The start process for execution of ideation starts with the script. In the scrip everything needs to be mentioned starting from the characters, their dialogues, sounds, music, background, camera everything. Generally, when a film is supposed to be signed by the actors, the script by the scriptwriter is the bases on which the cast accepts or declines the movie/film.

Thus, scripting has a very major role to play in the film industry and is the starting point of the project.

Also, the budget really determines the nature of the script. If every shot and every action of the film is planned out in advance, it allows the video to be shot relatively quickly and really saves on the expense.

There are certain very important elements that need to be incorporated in a script to really make it sound wonderful and ultimately come up with a wonderful video/movie which will grab all the attention from the viewers. Also, in order to make the movie self explanatory, the script also needs to be self-explanatory. Focus on the opening statement, which is the first line of the video. This opening really hooks on the viewer, instead if boring the audience.
The concept of the story should be very strong and each character should be brought alive through their dialogues and story telling. There is no room for error in writing a script, and a proactive sense of humour that really touches the laughter bones of its audience is a  huge opportunity for the film to receive great feedback whereas if one compromises on the humour , the misinterpretation of humour can really make the film disastrous as humour plays a key element in every film. Thus the concept is the main focus after which transitions follow the pursuit.
One should play attention to the transitions. While it seems perfectly normal to you to cut to the picture of a man tripping up the stairs, the rest of the viewers watching the film may be dazed and utterly confused and left scratching their heads. Certain questions that ay arise in their heads may be-Why did he trip? Is that part of the product? And why is he orange?
Thus, it is as important to make a meaningful script as well as execute it well.

Camera Angles In A Film

Camera Angles In A Film

There is four types of films, - documentary, narrative, experimental and instructional.
The 4 key elements in photography are Frame, shot, scene and sequence.
How a photographer really works around all these elements to produce a full new film is quite difficult as well as unique.

There are certain basic camera angles, which are mostly experimented with while making a film.
An extreme long shot is a shot wherein the frame encompasses the entire scenario. It is generally used when one has to display the background of the scene, buildings, and landscape.
A long shot is the one in which the focus is on the subject. It is very useful when one has to accommodate movement without reframing.

Medium long shots and medium close up shots also focus on the subject itself and are used quite creatively when editing is done.

Close up shots are one of the most exciting and widely used shots in a movie or film. It is used almost in every form of a video. It establishes its focus on the subject, most importantly the emotion. Whether its crying, laughing, smiling, sadness etc., or is there is an important scene like a kissing scene, playing scene and others which have to be brought onto the forefront, the close up shots are used.

The frame in a close up shot is quite large and the extremely zoomed out.
Another intriguing shot is the extreme close up shot. Here a particular part of the body or face is highlighted. For example, eyes, which are commonly, used, faces though are the most recurrent images used for such shots and the lens requirement is the zoom lens.

Other shots also include the eye level shots, reverse shot, low angle shots which is mostly used to create an illusion of height as the shot is taken from as low as possible. Dutch angles shots, high angle shots are other shots used. In a high angle shot, the function is exactly opposite to that of a low angle one. High angle shots make the subject appear shot as they are shot from the top. Many movies have experimented with these two types of shot and really filmed it well.

A pan shot is the most abundantly used shot. All forms of films have used this shot as it is quite innovative and used to cover the entire scenario. For example, even if one puts their camera on a tripod, a pan shot can we easily shot and will cover up a lot of background due to the multiple frame.

Cut in, over the head, tilt, dolly zoom, over the shoulder, medium shots are some basic and most innovate shots used.

Louis Vuitton : Paris Fashion Week (Resort Collection)

What dominates the idea of luxury in the fashion industry today, originated several decades back, when a young man; named, Louis Vuitton, decided to leave his generation old family history of being a miller and escape into the rich lands of Paris and start his own new journey.

Luck supports some, while despairs the others.
However this man was fortunate to have both luck and talent at his end.

The vast land of Paris had a lot to offer this young man who started off as an apprentice in a box making company. His luck triggered-off when queen Euglena placed orders with Louis for boxes.

At that time the couture worn by the society women, especially the elites were heavy, flowy, large and needed to be delicately enclosed in a box to avoid any wear and tear.

At this point the huge gap in the market was filled when Louis creatively designed the boxes in a manner that couture could be assembled in them without any harm.

Over the years Louis Vuitton and his generation of sons, due to their ability to sense social change and give it form, has made him one of the most famous designers today.

Starting off as manufacturers of travel trunks, the LV maison diversified their product ranges and now have become a major fashion player on the runways.

The 2016 set anew a grand opening to the new year with the Paris Fashion Week hitting the streets of UK.

Paris Fashion Week 2016

Resort wear

LA, one of the fast emerging fashion capitals of the world; was the location of the Resort Wear show 2016. The location had its own vibe of serenity paired with a little edginess and playfulness. This vibe was brought to reality with the runway imbibed within the view of a valley and models walking to the beats of the music wearing LV resort wear collection.

The Louis Vuitton house has a travel legacy associated with it, which was very much kept in mind as it was creatively brought alive in the couture. A sense of travel was also asserted through the hiking boots combined with flowy silhouettes allowing the ease of movement and comfort.

There was a bold usage of leather, especially in the jackets and zipper patchwork on the flowy gowns. Some of the floor length dresses were made out of leather in such a manner that it gave the appearance of silk.

The A-line silhouettes became the front-runners with a metal belt criss crossing at the front.

An effortless yet bold attitude was visible, not just in the clothing, but the atmosphere too.
Boho like clothing was inevitably visible

Gasquieres design philosophy was brought alive quite vibrantly and he set a perfect start to the new year with his awe striking designs which the fashion enthusiasts await for season after season.
