CONCEPTS IN ADVANCED EDITING
Editing is the first stage in
the stages of film production.
Cutting, mosaic and montage
are a part of the editing process.
The technique of juxtapositioning
of imagery in various sizes was strongly visible in the movie Physco. In the
murder scene of the movie, the nude woman could not be showed directly being
murdered. Here comes the creative usage of the editing skills.
The murder had to be shown
impressionistilly. The camera first gave emphasis on the woman bathing behind
the curtain, then the approachement of a blurry dark figure, the voice of
stabbing the knife bluntly into her while focusing on the face and hand, followed
by the stains of blood across her face and then her dead state, this series of
editing angle conveyed the story of murder very well without the murder
actually taking place. Mr. Alfred Hitchcock who is also known as the
"The Master of Suspense" was the creative mind behind this movie who
has acclaimed much appreciation for his efforts and talent portrayed especially
in ‘Physco’.
The second murder in the movie
Physco created apprehension first and then the juxtapositioning of images. This
shows how assembly of films can be changed to create different ideas. The movie
had very well placed cuts and clever camera movements that made shots look
unedited.
Earlier people shot what
interested them, they held a shot until they got bored or the film ran out.
Then why should one pay money when one could see the same thing on the streets.
EDITING!
Editing is the most important
stage in post production which completely changes the angle of the movie and
tells a story to the viewers without it
actually happening.
Editing has thus given the
film industry a new language. A language that transports us in to blink of an
eye to a dessert, to the mysteries of a human face.
The timing of a cut can
startle the audience or amuse them.
In the much popular movie
series of scream, Drew Barrymore plays an important role of the subject in the
murder scene. The scene was edited quite creatively.
There is peace and calmness established
initially when drew is casually talking over the phone. The scene then grows
into a darker one when the lights become less; the background music creates
mystery and the movement of camera shifts.
There is fear created by the
focus on emotions of the subject. Many events take place at the same time and create
anxiety. This shot targets the target audience of a phantom movie viewer. There
is an element of surprise and curiously in the entire movie of what will happen
next. This question, “what will happen next” is evolved continuously through movie.
Thus editing is an inevitable
part of any movie which can completely change the perception and the thought process of the viewers by
deceptive story telling.
